Pick Your Rewards Credit Cards

First you need some rewards credit cards. One card will not do, you need at least an AMEX, Visa, and Mastercard.

When selecting your reward credit cards. Think of where you shop and what type of cards they accept. In some case they might only accept Discover. Then you need a Discover card.

To find the rewards credit cards that are right for you, go to the credit card web sites. Select the type of reward your want: cash back or airline miles.

DO NOT get a points rewards credit card, because the cash back accumulate faster. My personal perference are cash back credit cards. Because cash is cash you can’t buy a hamburger with points or airline miles. Only pick airline miles if you travel a lot and are part of a mileage plan and the credit card adds miles to that plan.

DO NOT get a card with a annual fee. You don’t want to give back you rewards by paying the credit card companies a annual fee. Interest rate doesn’t matter much, because you will only send what you can payoff each month. Also read the fine print of the rewards. If a credit card says ‘UP TO’ a certain percent. That means it does not start at that percent but starts at a lower percent. Find out the starting percentage and see if you will send enough to get to the higher percentages.

Some rewards credit cards have special rewards by season. Check out Discover's Get More program.

You will also need a emergency card. This card will be used only for EMERGENCIES. Emergencies are things like the cars needs brakes or hospital bills not a new pair of shoes or a set of golf clubs.

When picking your emergency credit card look for the lowest interest rate. But still select a rewards credit card. A points rewards credit card is fine if the interest rate is low. You what a low interest rate because the balance on this credit card will be payed off over several months. So interest rate matters most when picking a emergency credit card.

Before applying for a rewards credit card check if you already have a credit card with that company. Because you can convert that credit card to the credit card you want and keep your history for that credit card.

Follow these simple rules: cash back credit cards, no annual fees, and have a emergency credit card with low interest rate. Now get yourself some rewards credit cards. My recommendations are American Express Blue Cash Card, Citi Dividend Card, Captial One No Hassel Cash Card, and Discover Get More Card.
